Ford Motor ( F ) and SK On of South Korea are looking for buyers for surplus batteries from their joint-venture factory in Glendale, Kentucky, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing Michael Adams, chief executive officer of the BlueOval SK venture.
The plant will supply Ford's F-150 Lightning pickup initially amid softening demand for electric vehicles in the US, the report said.
Along with EV makers, new clients may include energy storage companies, Adams said, according to the report.
"We continue to evaluate all opportunities to leverage our existing capital investments," Ford said in an emailed statement to MT Newswires.
"To say we're looking for buyers of excess capacity is a catchy line," BlueOval said in an emailed statement to MT Newswires, "However, the truth is we are an independent company who will always position ourselves to gain new customers."
In an announcement Tuesday on its website, BlueOval said it has launched commercial production at the Kentucky plant.
