Alphabet's (GOOG) Google ( GOOG ) unit received more than 250 complaints globally over an 11-month period that its Gemini artificial intelligence software was used to make deepfake terrorism material, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing Australian eSafety Commission records.
The company also received 86 reports from April 2023 through February 2024 warning that Gemini also was being used to create child abuse material, according to the report.
In a statement to MT Newswires, a Google ( GOOG ) spokesperson said the incidents represent the total number of user complaints it received worldwide, not confirmed content violations.
Google ( GOOG ) uses many ways to avoid illegal use of its platforms, including technology like hash-matching and automated tools, as well as human reviewers, the spokesperson added.
Tech firms, under Australian law, are required to supply the eSafety Commission with periodic reports about their harm reduction efforts for online users.
