Alphabet-owned (GOOG) Google's ( GOOG ) proposed replacement for cookies lacks adequate privacy protections, a UK regulator says, according to documents cited by The Wall Street Journal.
The UK's Information Commissioner's Office says that Google's ( GOOG ) proposed Privacy Sandbox technology remains vulnerable to privacy violations and can be used to identify individuals.
The ICO is sharing its concerns with the UK's Competition and Markets Authority, which is overseeing Google's ( GOOG ) efforts to get rid of activity-tracking cookies in its dominant Chrome browser worldwide, according to the report.
In a statement to MT Newswires, a Google ( GOOG ) spokesperson described Privacy Sandbox as a way to "deliver meaningful privacy improvements" without resorting to cross-site tracking cookies. "We've been closely engaging with the ICO, and other privacy and competition regulators globally, and will continue to do that to reach an outcome that works for users and the entire ecosystem," the spokesperson said.
