Howmet Aerospace ( HWM ) has informed customers it declared a force majeure event and may be forced to stop some shipments if targeted by new US tariffs, Reuters reported late Friday, citing a letter to customers.

"Howmet will be excused from supplying any products or services that are impacted by this declared national emergency and/or the tariff executive order," the letter reportedly said.

A force majeure declaration gives the company legal grounds to renegotiate or suspend contracts if it cannot meet its obligations due to unavoidable external circumstances, according to the report.

Howmet declined MT Newswires' request for comment on the matter.
