Update: Market Chatter: Jury Determines Fortress Controls VLSI in Intel-VLSI Patent Infringement Case
May 30, 2025 7:53 AM

10:24 AM EDT, 05/30/2025 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Fortress and Intel ( INTC ) responses in the fifth paragraph.)

Intel ( INTC ) could possibly escape over $3 billion in patent-infringement verdicts after the US District Court for the Western District of Texas determined Thursday that VLSI Technology is controlled by Fortress Investment Group, Bloomberg reported.

The jury determined that VLSI and Finjan are both controlled by the asset management firm Fortress, the news report said.

During the three-day trial, the chipmaker argued that its 2012 licensing agreement with Finjan covered VLSI's patents as the two companies are affiliated, the report said.

The verdict could help Intel ( INTC ) in furthering its efforts to push the court to ultimately overturn a November 2022 verdict of over $900 million and a similar verdict of $2.2 billion that VLSI won against Intel ( INTC ), the report said.

Fortress and Intel ( INTC ) declined to comment when reached by MT Newswires. VLSI didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
