Update: Market Chatter: Microsoft, OpenAI Partnership Strained as Startup Weighs Antitrust Scrutiny
Jun 17, 2025 3:37 AM

06:22 AM EDT, 06/17/2025 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with responses from Microsoft ( MSFT ) and OpenAI in the fifth paragraph.)

Microsoft's ( MSFT ) partnership with OpenAI is under stress, with OpenAI executives weighing the option of accusing Microsoft ( MSFT ) of anticompetitive behavior, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The effort could include seeking a federal review of their contract for antitrust violations, the people reportedly said.

The companies are at a standoff due to the terms of OpenAI's $3 billion acquisition of Windsurf, according to the report.

Microsoft ( MSFT ) wants to expand its stake in OpenAI more than what the startup is willing to give, the sources reportedly said.

Microsoft ( MSFT ) and OpenAI told MT Newswires in a joint statement that the companies have a long-term "productive partnership that has delivered amazing AI tools for everyone." And that ongoing negotiations seem positive, and that the two will continue to work together in the future.
