Update: Market Chatter: Microsoft-Backed OpenAI Preparing to Launch AI-Powered Browser to Compete With Google
Jul 10, 2025 4:31 AM

07:03 AM EDT, 07/10/2025 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Microsoft's ( MSFT ) response in the fifth paragraph.)

Microsoft ( MSFT )-backed (MSFT) OpenAI is preparing to launch an artificial intelligence-powered web browser that could directly compete with Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google Chrome, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing three people familiar with the matter.

The browser, set to be released in the coming weeks, will include a ChatGPT-style interface that handles some user tasks without requiring clicks to external websites, the sources reportedly said.

OpenAI's browser is being built on Chromium, a Google ( GOOG )-owned open-source code that also powers Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera (OPRA), two of the sources told Reuters.

OpenAI chose to develop a full browser instead of a plug-in to gain more control over user data, according to the report.

Microsoft ( MSFT ) and OpenAI declined to comment on the matter, while Google ( GOOG ) did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
