Update: Market Chatter: Netflix Facing Probe in India for Alleged Business Malpractices, Reuters Reports
Sep 29, 2024 7:34 AM

04:55 AM EDT, 09/24/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates to add a statement from Netflix ( NFLX ) in the third paragraph.)

Netflix ( NFLX ) is facing an investigation in India, with the country's Foreigners Regional Registration Office looking into allegations of visa violations, racial discrimination, tax evasion and other malpractices, Reuters reported Monday, citing a government email.

Reuters said details of the probe were disclosed in a July 20 email that a home ministry official sent to Nandini Mehta, Netflix's ( NFLX ) former director of business and legal affairs in India. According to the report, Mehta is also suing the company for alleged wrongful termination and racial and gender discrimination.

A Netflix ( NFLX ) spokesperson told MT Newswires that the company is "unaware" of the Indian government's investigation and that Mehta's accusations are "categorically untrue." The spokesperson said Netflix ( NFLX ) is "confident her claims will be found to be totally lacking in merit."

The Foreigners Regional Registration Office did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
