Update: Market Chatter: OpenAI CEO's AI Infrastructure Plan to Reportedly Begin in US With 'Tens of Billions of Dollars' Investment
Sep 6, 2024 12:12 PM

08:16 AM EDT, 09/04/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with comment request in the final paragraph.)

OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman's plans to build infrastructure for artificial intelligence, including machinery and systems, will begin in the US with an expected "tens of billions of dollars" investment, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing a person familiar with the matter.

Altman's initiative aims to attract global investors to fund the building of data centers, boosting energy capacity and expanding semiconductor manufacturing.

Backers may include investors from Canada, South Korea, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates, with potential private sector partners such as Microsoft ( MSFT ) . Altman and other OpenAI executives, including Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon and Vice President of Global Policy Chris Lehane, have been engaging investors worldwide, the report said.

Bloomberg said discussions with investors are taking place as OpenAI is nearing a new funding round that could value it at over $100 billion, led by Thrive Capital with participation from Microsoft ( MSFT ), Apple ( AAPL ) , and Nvidia ( NVDA ) .

The report said OpenAI's global plan could potentially face scrutiny from the Committee on Foreign Investment due to national security concerns.

Microsoft ( MSFT ) did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
