Microsoft ( MSFT )-backed (MSFT) OpenAI plans to discontinue the app for its Sora video platform, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, citing the artificial intelligence firm.
OpenAI appears to be refocusing on business and coding functions ahead of a possible initial public offering as soon as Q4, according to the report.
An OpenAI spokesperson said Sora's initial goal was to teach AI to understand and simulate the physical world in motion. Amid rising compute demand, the Sora team is now redirecting focus to world simulation research to advance robotics for real-world, physical tasks, the spokesperson said.
There will be no changes to image generation in ChatGPT, according to the spokesperson.
The company is making tradeoffs in allocating compute across research, product launches, and inference, prioritizing the highest-value uses, the spokesperson added.
