Uber Technologies ( UBER ) was sued by the US Department of Justice over claims that it discriminates against people with physical disabilities, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

The US Justice Department's civil rights unit filed a lawsuit Thursday in a California federal court, alleging that Uber ( UBER ) drivers frequently refuse to accommodate riders with service animals or stowable wheelchairs, according to the report.

The DOJ mentioned in the lawsuit that after it notified Uber ( UBER ) of its probe, the company rolled out an optional self-identification feature for riders to disclose to a driver they will be traveling with a service animal, according to Bloomberg.

In an emailed response to MT Newswires, Uber ( UBER ) refuted the allegations, adding that passengers with guide dogs or assistive devices "deserve a safe, respectful, and welcoming experience on Uber ( UBER )" and the company has a zero-tolerance policy for confirmed service denials. Uber ( UBER ) also said it takes decisive actions for confirmed violations.

"We continue to invest in technology, training, and dedicated reporting channels - such as a 24/7 service animal denial hotline - to ensure riders can quickly alert us so we can investigate and address issues. We remain deeply committed to expanding access and continuously improving the experience for riders with disabilities," the company said.
