Update: Market Chatter: US Plans to Impose Additional Controls on Semiconductor Exports
Jan 10, 2025 3:49 AM

06:25 AM EST, 01/10/2025 (MT Newswires) -- (Update with NVIDIA's ( NVDA ) comment in seventh paragraph)

US President Joe Biden's administration is planning one more round of restrictions on the export of artificial intelligence chips, Bloomberg reported Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The regulations, which could be issued as soon as Friday, would create three tiers of chip trade restrictions, according to the report.

At the top level, a few US allies would maintain essentially unmitigated access to American chips, while a group of adversaries would be effectively blocked from importing the semiconductors, Bloomberg reported. The vast majority of the world would face restrictions on the total computing power that can go to one country, the report said.

A representative of the White House's National Security Council declined to comment, the Bloomberg report said. The Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security didn't immediately respond to Bloomberg's request for comment.

The Bureau of Industry and Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.

Some of the largest chip manufacturers in the world with exposure to countries such as China include Nvidia ( NVDA ) , Intel ( INTC ) , AMD (AMD), Qualcomm ( QCOM ) and ASML ( ASML ) . Shares of these companies slipped in after-hours activity.

"The extreme 'country cap' policy will affect mainstream computers in countries around the world, doing nothing to promote national security but rather pushing the world to alternative technologies," Ned Finkle, VP of Government Affairs at NVIDIA ( NVDA ) said criticizing the Biden Administration's policy on datacenter technology.
