06:45 AM EDT, 10/09/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Google's ( GOOG ) comment in fifth paragraph)
The US Department of Justice is set to propose measures that Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) should take to restore competition in online search, Reuters reported Tuesday.
The expected DOJ proposals are the next step in an antitrust case after a federal court ruling in August found that Google ( GOOG ), which processes 90% of internet searches in the US, holds an illegal monopoly in the online search market, according to the report.
Google's ( GOOG ) smaller rivals are advocating for it to spin off its Chrome browser and stop paying billions of dollars to be the default search engine on devices like iPhones, the report said.
Google ( GOOG ) plans to appeal the court ruling as it asserts that it has gained users through the quality of its search engine and that it faces competition from Amazon.com (AMZN) and other search engines, the report added.
Google ( GOOG ) said in a blog post that it will respond in detail to the DOJ's ultimate proposals as it prepares its court case for next year but is concerned that the DOJ's requests may extend beyond the relevant legal issues in this case.
