Update: Market Chatter: Visa, Mastercard Win Right to Appeal UK Ruling on Merchant Fees
Mar 17, 2026 11:00 AM

01:33 PM EDT, 03/17/2026 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Visa's comment in the third paragraph.)

Visa (V) and Mastercard ( MA ) can appeal a court judgment by the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal that ruled their default multilateral interchange fees charged to retailers breach European competition law, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing a ruling by the UK Court of Appeal.

The report said the companies welcomed the decision, while law firm Scott+Scott, which represents the claimants, said it was "confident that we will resist the application successfully at the substantive appeal."

"We continue to believe that interchange is a critical component to maintaining a secure digital payments ecosystem that benefits all parties, including consumers, merchants and banks," a Visa spokesperson said in an emailed statement to MT Newswires.

Mastercard ( MA ) did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Visa shares were little changed, and Mastercard ( MA ) rose 0.5% in Tuesday trading.
