11:11 AM EDT, 06/18/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with IBM's ( IBM ) response in the fifth paragraph.)
McDonald's (MCD) is ending its test of artificial intelligence drive-through technology in partnership with International Business Machines ( IBM ) beyond 2024, a McDonald's spokesperson confirmed to MT Newswires Tuesday.
"As we move forward, our work with IBM ( IBM ) has given us the confidence that a voice ordering solution for drive-thru will be part of our restaurants' future," the spokesperson added. "We see tremendous opportunity in advancing our restaurant technology and will continue to evaluate long-term, scalable solutions that will help us make an informed decision on a future voice ordering solution by the end of the year."
McDonald's thinks that there is an "opportunity" to mull voice ordering services more widely, the spokesperson said.
The company and IBM ( IBM ) signed a collaboration in 2021 to test and explore the Automated Order Taker technology at restaurant drive-throughs.
"While McDonald's is revaluating and refining its plans for AOT, we look forward to continuing to work with them on a variety of other projects," an IBM ( IBM ) spokesperson told MT Newswires. "IBM ( IBM ) also is now in discussions and pilots with several Quick-Serve Restaurant clients who are interested in the AOT technology."
