11:27 AM EDT, 03/26/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with company response in the fourth and fifth paragraphs.)
Meta Platforms' ( META ) oversight board on Tuesday recommended the Facebook owner to end its blanket ban on the Arabic word "shaheed."
The social media giant presently removes any posts using "shaheed" in referring to people it designates on its list of "dangerous organizations and individuals." The oversight board said that the approach is "overbroad, and substantially and disproportionately restricts free expression."
"Meta should stop presuming that the word 'shaheed,' when used to refer to a designated individual or unnamed members of designated organizations, is always violating and ineligible for policy exceptions," the oversight board said while making several other recommendations.
Meta will review the oversight board's feedback and respond within 60 days, a company spokesperson told MT Newswires in an e-mailed response.
"We want people to be able to use our platforms to share their views, and have a set of policies to help them do so safely," the spokesperson said. "We aim to apply these policies fairly but doing so at scale brings global challenges."
