11:01 AM EST, 12/17/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates to include a comment from a Meta Platforms ( META ) spokesperson in the last paragraph.)

Meta Platforms ( META ) has agreed to a 50 million Australian dollar ($31.7 million) settlement to resolve civil penalty proceedings launched by the Australian Information Commissioner in March 2020, the watchdog said Tuesday.

The settlement relates to eligible Australian Facebook users who were impacted by the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

The Commissioner alleged that the company violated the country's privacy laws after personal information of some Australian Facebook users was disclosed to the This is Your Digital Life app.

A spokesperson for Meta Platforms ( META ) told MT Newswires that the company settled on a "no admissions basis" to close the matter on allegations related to previous practices that are "no longer relevant to how Meta's products or systems work today."
