Update: Meta's Facebook, Instagram Face European Commission Probe Over Potential Breach of Digital Services Act
Apr 30, 2024 7:59 AM

10:32 AM EDT, 04/30/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with additional details in the third, fourth and fifth paragraph)

Meta Platforms' ( META ) Facebook and Instagram are facing an investigation by the European Commission over the social media platforms' potential breach of the Digital Services Act, the Commission said Tuesday.

The potential infringements cover the company's policies on political content and deceptive advertising on its platforms, the regulator said.

The investigation will also focus on the lack of a third-party tool for monitoring civic discourse and elections before the upcoming European parliament and other member states' elections, the Commission noted.

Additionally, the Commission suspects that Meta's notice and action mechanism for reporting illegal content does not comply with the Digital Services Act and the company has failed to deploy an effective complaint-handling system to address content moderation decisions.

The investigation does not have a legal deadline and empowers the Commission to further enforcement steps and accept commitments by the company to remedy issues, according to the press release.

Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment by MT Newswires.
