Update: Microsoft Claims Cutting Out Anthropic Could Hurt US Military Capabiity
Mar 11, 2026 5:45 AM

08:17 AM EDT, 03/11/2026 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with the Pentagon's response in the sixth paragraph.)

Microsoft ( MSFT ) filed a legal brief Tuesday urging a court to temporarily block the US government's decision to blacklist Amazon ( AMZN )-backed (AMZN) Anthropic over a dispute on uses of AI technology.

The Pentagon designated Anthropic a supply-chain risk last month and canceled its contracts after the company demanded guarantees that the military would not use its technology for autonomous warfare or domestic mass surveillance.

Microsoft ( MSFT ) said it has "a close business relationship with Anthropic" and incorporates its technologies into products that it provides to the US military.

Microsoft ( MSFT ) said the immediate banning of Anthropic would be disruptive and urged a temporary restraining order, which would "enable a more orderly transition and avoid disrupting the American military's ongoing use of advanced AI," the filing said.

A lack of a restraining order "could potentially hamper US warfighters at a critical point in time," the filing said.

A spokesman for the Pentagon said, "it does not comment on ongoing litigation."
