Eight US newspaper publishers filed a lawsuit against Microsoft ( MSFT ) and OpenAI in a federal court in New York, accusing the companies of reusing their articles without authorization in order to train their generative artificial intelligence products, according to media reports.
Microsoft's ( MSFT ) Copilot assistant and OpenAI's ChatGPT have allegedly been "purloining millions of the publishers' copyrighted articles without permission and without payment," CNBC reported, citing the complaint.
The publishers in the lawsuit operate the New York Daily News, the Chicago Tribune, the Orlando Sentinel, the Sun Sentinel in Florida, The Mercury News of California, The Denver Post, The Orange County Register in California, and the Pioneer Press of Minnesota, CNBC added.
Microsoft ( MSFT ) declined to comment while OpenAI did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
