Update: Microsoft-Backed OpenAI Reportedly Eyeing Contract With NATO
Mar 11, 2026 3:32 AM

06:12 AM EDT, 03/11/2026 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with NATO's comment in the fourth paragraph.)

Microsoft ( MSFT )-backed (MSFT) OpenAI is contemplating a contract to deploy its artificial intelligence technology on the unclassified networks of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, news outlets reported Tuesday, citing a person familiar with the matter.

OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman had initially said that the company was looking to deploy on all NATO classified networks, Reuters reported. However, a company spokesperson later clarified that Altman misspoke and the contract opportunity was for NATO's unclassified networks, according to the report.

Microsoft ( MSFT ) has invested billions into OpenAI.

NATO's Communications and Information Agency operates under a large enterprise deal with Microsoft ( MSFT ), which provides a range of NATO services, including access to OpenAI's Platform as a Service, a NATO official told MT Newswires via email a week later.

OpenAI did not respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
