Update: Nike Reportedly Loses Trademark Bid for 'Footware' to Puma in European Court; Ordered to Pay Legal Costs
Jun 12, 2024 1:31 PM

04:07 PM EDT, 06/12/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Puma's response in the third paragraph.)

Nike's ( NKE ) trademark application for the capitalized version of the word "footware" was dismissed by the General Court of the European Union and the shoemaker was ordered to pay legal costs in Puma's favor, media reports said Wednesday.

Nike ( NKE ) may appeal the decision to the European Court of Justice, The Wall Street Journal reported.

"Puma is delighted that the General Court of the European Union now has confirmed the Board of Appeals decision," a company's spokesperson said in an email to MT Newswires. "Puma has been arguing for years that at least some consumers will read the term 'footware' as 'footwear' and therefore will only see the sign 'footware' as descriptive information regarding the intended purpose of the goods and services."

Nike ( NKE ) did not respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
