Update: Nutrien to Sell Profertil Stake for $600 Million, National Bank Maintains Sector Perform Rating
Sep 8, 2025 9:34 AM

11:57 AM EDT, 09/08/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Nutrien ( NTR ) said it agreed Monday to sell its 50% stake in Argentina-based nitrogen producer Profertil to Adecoagro and Asociacion de Cooperativas Argentinas Coop for $600 million before taxes.

Nutrien ( NTR ) said the sale aligns with its strategy to focus on assets and geographies that are core to its long-term vision.

The company plans to use the proceeds to fund its capital allocation priorities, including targeted growth investments, share repurchases and debt reduction.

"We believe these initiatives will enhance the quality of Nutrien's ( NTR ) earnings and support long term growth in free cash flow," said Ken Seitz, Nutrien's ( NTR ) president and chief executive.

Nutrien ( NTR ) said the proportionate share of Profertil earnings recorded in the company's nitrogen operating segment totaled about $60 million over the previous four quarters.

The remaining 50% equity owner in Portefil holds a 90-day right of first refusal to purchase Nutrien's ( NTR ) equity on the same terms and conditions, Nutrien ( NTR ) said.

The transaction is expected to close before the end of 2025.

Nutrien ( NTR ) kept its sector perform rating and US$64 price target at National Bank of Canada after the news.

The bank based the price target using a 6.7x EV/EBITDA multiple on its 2026E.

National Bank said the sale is consistent with Nutrien's ( NTR ) efforts to maintain best-in-class assets while deleveraging the balance sheet.

Nutrien ( NTR ) traded 1.5% higher at last look to $57.26 on the NYSE.
