An initiative to classify Massachusetts Uber Technologies (UBER) and Lyft ( LYFT ) drivers as independent contractors is allowed to appear on the 2024 ballot, the state Supreme Judicial Court said Thursday.
The court also approved a separate ballot measure that would grant collective bargaining rights to Uber ( UBER ) and Lyft ( LYFT ) drivers.
The state attorney general's certifications and summaries "comply with the requirements" of the state's constitution, the court ruled.
"However, we retain jurisdiction to revisit our rulings and conclusions and, if appropriate, to withdraw this opinion in the event the proponents seek to place more than one petition on the November ballot," it said.
Flexibility and Benefits for Massachusetts Drivers campaign spokesperson Conor Yunits told called the question's inclusion on the ballot a "huge win and a great day for rideshare and delivery drivers."
"Voters will finally have an opportunity to stand with the 85% of drivers in Massachusetts who support the independence and historic new benefits that this ballot question delivers," Yunits said in an email to MT Newswires.
Flexibility and Benefits for Massachusetts is funded by Uber ( UBER ), Lyft ( LYFT ), DoorDash ( DASH ) and Instacart (CART), according to its website.
