Update: Snap Sued by Texas AG for Allegedly Deceiving Parents on Inappropriate Content, Addictive Features
Mar 11, 2026 3:50 AM

03:12 AM EST, 02/12/2026 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Snap response in the final paragraph.)

Snap (SNAP) has been sued by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for allegedly deceiving parents on the inappropriate materials on the Snapchat platform, as well as its addictive design, according to a Wednesday statement from the government official's office.

The lawsuit alleges that Snapchat misrepresented the app as being safe for children with a "12+" rating while its users are exposed to mature content such as profanity, sexual content, nudity and drug use, the statement said.

The lawsuit also alleges that the app causes harm to young minds due to the addictive nature of features such as Snapstreaks and other incentives to use the app regularly, according to the statement.

"This lawsuit will hold Snapchat accountable for illegally undermining parental rights, deceiving consumers, and for putting children in danger," Paxton said.

The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in the District Court of Collin County in Texas.

A Snap spokesperson told MT Newswires that the company "strongly" disagrees with the complaint, "which fundamentally distorts how our platform works," and that it has "implemented strong safeguards, introduced safety tutorials and resources, partnered with experts, and continue[s] investing in features and tools that support the safety, privacy, and well-being of all Snapchatters."
