Oct 3, 2024 1:23 AM

10:52 AM EDT, 09/25/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with statement from Southwest Airlines ( LUV ) in the fourth paragraph.)

Southwest Airlines ( LUV ) is planning to reduce its Atlanta flights to 381 weekly flights from 567, according to media reports Wednesday.

Starting in April, the company will also trim its destinations from the city to 21 from 37, while expanding service in Nashville and adding redeye flights to Hawaii, according to the reports.

Although Southwest ( LUV ) is not planning any layoffs for its Atlanta-based employees, as many as 200 flight attendant and 140 pilot positions are expected to be eliminated and crews will likely need to submit bids to operate from other locations, CNBC said, citing a company memo.

"We continue to optimize our network to meet customer demand, best utilize our fleet, and maximize revenue opportunities," Southwest ( LUV ) told MT Newswires. "Decisions like these are difficult for our company because of the effects on our people, but we have a history of more than 53 years of ensuring they are taken care of."
