Update: Sysco Workers Prepare to Strike After Negotiations Fail, Labor Union Says
Jan 13, 2025 11:41 AM

02:05 PM EST, 01/13/2025 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with details throughout. Further updates with a statement from Sysco ( SYY ))

Sysco ( SYY ) workers in Houston are preparing to strike after the company pulled out of negotiations, the Teamsters union said in a statement Monday.

According to the union, over 430 Sysco ( SYY ) drivers, warehouse workers, and mechanics represented by Teamsters Local 988 are planning to strike after both sides failed to reach a collective bargaining agreement.

Teamsters Local 988 is comprised of nearly 8,000 members, according to its website.

"The wage package Sysco ( SYY ) has proposed is insulting, unrealistic, and fails to reflect the value of our members' hard work," said Robert Mele, President of Teamsters Local 988, in a statement.

Meanwhile, Sysco ( SYY ) in a statement said the Teamsters' allegations were false and misleading and the union was attempting to gain attention with its threat to engage in a multi-site strike.

"Rather than negotiate responsibly to benefit our Sysco ( SYY ) colleagues, the Teamsters have chosen to attack our business, prevent our colleagues from enjoying immediate, substantial wage increases, and harm our communities," Sysco ( SYY ) chief human resources officer Ron Phillips said in a statement.

The company said it had offered a 20% wage increase over the life of a new contract and the proposal contained additional vacation time and lower healthcare costs for workers.

"We call on the Teamsters to negotiate seriously and represent their members," Phillips added.
