Update: Teck Resources Merger With Anglo Reportedly Faces Scrutiny From Canadian Government
Sep 16, 2025 2:11 PM

04:59 PM EDT, 09/16/2025 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with response from an Anglo American spokesperson in the sixth paragraph.)

Teck Resources ( TECK ) and Anglo American have yet to convince the Canadian government that their proposed merger would benefit the country's economy, multiple media reports said Tuesday, citing Canada's Industry Minister Melanie Joly.

Joly plans to meet with the chief executive officers of the companies next week, the reports said.

"There have been conversations with the companies, and clearly we wanted to make sure that there would be a net benefit to Canada," Joly told reporters in Ottawa, according to the reports.

She also said that while Teck and Anglo have promised the combined company would be headquartered in Vancouver, the government is seeking long-term commitments on job creation and maintaining a strong Canadian presence for years to come, according to the reports.

"This merger of equals will create a Canadian-based global critical minerals champion, with significant economic, social, and strategic benefits for Canada," Teck said in an emailed statement to MT Newswires. "We look forward to engaging with the Government of Canada through the ICA process about this opportunity to strengthen Canada's critical minerals sector."

Anglo American told MT Newswires that it looks forward to engaging with the Canadian government on the comprehensive package of indefinite commitments it has made, which the company said would support the creation of a Canada-based global critical minerals champion with economic, social, and strategic benefits for the country.

Teck shares fell 3.4% in recent Tuesday trading.
