03:20 PM EDT, 05/31/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with background details starting in third paragraph.)
The Texas Supreme Court denied Boeing's ( BA ) petition for the high court to review an appeals court's ruling in favor of pilots seeking lost compensation for flights canceled over safety concerns with the 737 Max aircraft.
The court did not give any reason for its decision.
Boeing ( BA ) sought the dismissal of the lawsuit filed by the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, arguing the union had no legal standing to assert claims on behalf of its members. The claims were related to the March 2019 grounding of all Max aircraft in the wake of deadly crashes.
The union said the 737 Max grounding caused the elimination of thousands of scheduled Southwest ( LUV ) flights. Boeing ( BA ) may face tens of millions of dollars in claims from pilots.
Boeing ( BA ), Southwest Airlines ( LUV ) and the pilot's union didn't immediately reply to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
Boeing ( BA ) shares rose 2.2% in recent trading Friday, and Southwest ( LUV ) climbed 2%.
