Update: Trump Refiles Shorter Version of $15 Billion Defamation Suit Against The New York Times
Oct 17, 2025 10:50 AM

01:21 PM EDT, 10/17/2025 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with response from The New York Times ( NYT ) in the last paragraph.)

President Donald Trump has refiled a shorter 40-page version of his $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times ( NYT ) , several reporters at the newspaper, and Penguin Random House.

Trump alleges in the suit that the defendants made "numerous defamatory statements" regarding the president in at least two articles in The New York Times ( NYT ) and a book published by Penguin Random House.

The statements "wrongly defame and disparage" Trump's reputation, according to the lawsuit.

Bloomberg reported on Sept. 19 that US District Judge Steven Merryday in Florida dismissed Trump's previous defamation lawsuit against The New York Times ( NYT ) days after it was filed.

Bloomberg reported at the time that Merryday found that lawyers breached court rules requiring simple, direct claims, citing "repetitive" and "florid" allegations in the previous suit.

"As we said when this was first filed and again after the judge's ruling to strike it: this lawsuit has no merit," a New York Times ( NYT ) spokesperson told MT Newswires Friday. "Nothing has changed today. This is merely an attempt to stifle independent reporting and generate PR attention, but The New York Times ( NYT ) will not be deterred by intimidation tactics."
