03:31 PM EDT, 07/15/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with statement from Uber ( UBER ) in the sixth paragraph)
Uber's ( UBER ) competing taxi operators won an appeal Monday to slash a 20% tax charge on rides outside of London.
The UK Court of Appeal overturned a decision by London's High Court in 2023 that imposed a 20% value added tax on private-hire operators after Uber ( UBER ) filed a lawsuit.
Uber's ( UBER ) lawsuit was over the tax implications of a 2021 ruling by the Supreme Court that said drivers were entitled to worker benefits.
The tax charge was challenged by Delta Taxis and Veezu.
Law firm Aaron & Partners, which represented Delta, said it welcomed the decision.
"We will review the judgment in detail and consider our next steps. This verdict means that the requirements for operators are now inconsistent between London and the rest of England and Wales," an Uber ( UBER ) spokesperson told MT Newswires.
Veezu did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
Uber ( UBER ) shares were down 0.5% in recent trading.
