UnitedHealth Group's ( UNH ) UnitedHealthcare Chief Executive Brian Thompson was shot and killed Wednesday morning in Manhattan in what New York police are describing as a possible targeted attack, according to multiple news reports.

Reports said the incident occurred at around 6:46 am ET, when a masked man fired repeatedly at Thompson soon after he arrived at a Midtown hotel ahead of a scheduled investor conference. The assailant then fled eastbound off of 6th Avenue, police sources told The New York Post.

Thompson was taken to Mt Sinai Hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead, police told the newspaper.

UnitedHealth Group ( UNH ) did not immediately reply to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
