06:49 AM EST, 01/14/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The outgoing Biden administration is finalizing rules that would bar most imports of cars and trucks equipped with Chinese or Russian technology to the US, news outlets reported Tuesday.
The rule bans the import or sale of connected smart vehicles with hardware or software that have a "sufficient nexus" to China or Russia or the sale of those components separately, Bloomberg reported. The rules also bar any manufacturers with ties to Russia or China from selling US-made vehicles within the US.
The US government does not want too many Chinese cars on the roads and then realize it is a threat, Commerce of Secretary Gina Raimondo told Reuters.
The US Commerce Department is also considering a similar crackdown on Chinese drones, Reuters reported.
Incoming Trump administration will have the final say on the rules, Reuters reported.
