11:15 AM EDT, 06/14/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The US Federal Aviation Administration and Spirit AeroSystems ( SPR ) are investigating fake documents certifying the authenticity of titanium that may have been used in some Boeing ( BA ) and Airbus airplanes.
"This is about titanium that has entered the supply system via documents that have been counterfeited," a Spirit spokesperson said Friday in an emailed statement to MT Newswires.
"When this was identified, all suspect parts were quarantined and removed from Spirit production," the Spirit spokesperson said. "More than 1,000 tests have been completed to confirm the mechanical and metallurgical properties of the affected material to ensure continued airworthiness."
A Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson said Boeing ( BA ) reported a "voluntary disclosure to the FAA regarding procurement of material through a distributor who may have falsified or provided incorrect records."
"Boeing ( BA ) issued a bulletin outlining ways suppliers should remain alert to the potential of falsified records," the FAA spokesperson said in an emailed statement. "The FAA is investigating the scope and impact of the issue through our continued operational safety process."
A Boeing ( BA ) spokesperson said in an emailed statement, "This industry-wide issue affects some shipments of titanium received by a limited set of suppliers, and tests performed to date have indicated that the correct titanium alloy was used."
"To ensure compliance, we are removing any affected parts on airplanes prior to delivery," the Boeing ( BA ) spokesperson said. "Our analysis shows the in-service fleet can continue to fly safely."
Boeing ( BA ) shares fell 1.8% in recent trading Friday.
