02:58 PM EDT, 07/31/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Wednesday issued a supplemental initial decision, confirming its initial decision that certain air bag inflators manufactured by ARC Automotive and Delphi Automotive Systems contain a defect tied to motor vehicle safety.
Based on available information, about 51 million of the inflators in question were manufactured and installed in about 49 million vehicles in the US, according to the NHTSA notice.
The ARC and Delphi air bags have been used by at least 12 carmakers, including General Motors ( GM ) , Stellantis NV ( STLA ) , Volkswagen AG and Hyundai Motor, according to a Bloomberg report.
"NHTSA is issuing this supplemental initial decision to address in greater detail the basis for the agency's initial decision and to ensure that all vehicles and manufacturers that would be impacted by any recall order are included within the scope of the initial decision," the NHTSA said in the notice.
