10:27 AM EDT, 05/14/2025 (MT Newswires) -- US smartphone shipments rose 30% year-on-year in March as Apple ( AAPL ) and other companies scrambled to bring inventory into the country ahead of the tariffs announced by the Trump administration in early April, Counterpoint Research said Wednesday.
Counterpoint said shipment volumes from the biggest smartphone exporting countries including China, India and Vietnam increased, which boosted US inventories by 51% in March compared with a year earlier.
Counterpoint said Apple ( AAPL ), Samsung and Motorola "saw their shipment contribution from India increase."
"Apple's ( AAPL ) sell-in grew 42% YoY in March as it rushed units into the US to avoid the most severe impact of tariffs placed on China," Counterpoint said. "Inventory in Q1 climbed to a record number of weeks to help keep prices stable through the summer."
Counterpoint noted that "shipments from India increased disproportionately YoY, whereas China saw a less dramatic bump."
