US Supreme Court Allows Order Requiring Google to Make Play Store Reforms
Oct 7, 2025 4:18 AM

06:59 AM EDT, 10/07/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The US Supreme Court on Monday declined to block parts of a lower court order requiring Google ( GOOG ) to make major changes to its Play Store.

The decision followed a ruling last year from US District Judge James Donato ordering Google ( GOOG ) to allow rival app stores to be downloaded within the Play Store and make its app catalog available to competitors by July 2026.

A part of the ruling, taking effect later this month, will let developers add external links in their apps so users can bypass Google's ( GOOG ) billing system.

Google ( GOOG ) said it was disappointed by the Supreme Court's decision but plans to file a full appeal by October 27, according to Reuters.

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said in a X post that the ruling means developers will soon be 'legally entitled' to offer alternative payment options without Google ( GOOG ) fees or restrictions.

Google ( GOOG ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
