US Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production Surges in February, EIA Reports
May 26, 2025 2:54 AM

11:38 AM EDT, 05/07/2025 (MT Newswires) -- US production of sustainable aviation fuel nearly doubled to 44,000 barrels per day in February 2025 from December 2024, the US Energy Information Administration said Tuesday.

EIA said investments in SAF have increased due to federal tax credits and various state-level incentives, which has contributed to the increase in the fuel type.

Despite strong growth in SAF as a percentage, overall volumes will remain modest, accounting for less than 2% of about 1.7 million b/d of jet fuel consumption in the US in 2025 and about 2% in 2026, the EIA stated. Total US SAF production is measured under the EIA's "Other Biofuels" category.

Data revealed that production increased to 33,000 b/d in January, up nearly 30% from the previous high recorded in September 2024.

With SAF production capacity now around 30,000 b/d compared to just 2,000 b/d at the start of 2024, the EIA expects SAF to become the primary driver of growth in the Other Biofuels category.

Phillips 66 (PSX) brought a 10,000 b/d of SAF production capacity online at its Rodeo, California, facility in Q3 2024. Though Phillips 66 temporarily halted production in Q4 2024, new contributions from smaller producers have continued to push overall capacity higher, the EIA said.

Diamond Green Diesel, headquartered in Norco, Louisiana, commissioned a 15,000 b/d SAF plant in Port Arthur, Texas, in Q4 2024. New Rise Renewables also began SAF production at its Reno, Nevada plant in February 2025, adding up to 3,000 b/d to the existing capacity.

Oil major Par Pacific is targeting a mid-to-late 2025 startup at its Kapolei, Hawaii, facility, which is expected to bring on an additional 2,000 b/d.
