05:44 AM EDT, 08/27/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The implementation of US President Donald Trump's move to double tariffs on goods from India to 50% took effect Wednesday, intensifying tensions between the two largest democracies, according to multiple reports.

Following India's purchase of Russian oil, a punitive tariff of 25% has been added to the previous 25% tariff that Trump had imposed on many products from India.

This raises total tariffs to 50% on products like garments, gems and jewellery, footwear, sporting goods, furniture, and chemicals-making them some of the highest levied by the US.
