US Transportation Department, FAA Plan Temporary 10% Reduction in Local Flights at 40 Airports

05:07 AM EST, 11/07/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The US Transportation Department and Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday that they will temporarily cut flights at 40 high-traffic US airports by 10% as part of measures intended to national airspace safety during the government shutdown.

The regulators said a 4% reduction in operations will be implemented Friday, increasing to 6% by Tuesday, to 8% by Thursday, and 10% by Nov. 14. The orders do not cover international flights, according to the statement.

In a Thursday report, Bloomberg said Delta Air Lines ( DAL ) will cancel about 170 Friday flights, United Airlines Holdings ( UAL ) will cut about 510 services between Friday and Sunday, Southwest Airlines ( LUV ) will remove about 120 flights on its Friday schedule, and American Airlines Group ( AAL ) will cut 220 flights daily through Monday.
