US Transportation Department Seeks Public Input on Airline Disruption Compensation
Dec 5, 2024 6:14 AM

08:54 AM EST, 12/05/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The US Transportation Department sought public input Thursday on proposed rules that would require airlines to pay passengers cash compensation of up to $775, rebook them for free on the next available flight, and cover meal, lodging and transportation costs during disruptions caused by the air carrier.

The department noted that Canada, Brazil, the European Union, the UK and other nations require airlines to compensate passengers and provide services when an airline mechanical or technical failure results in a delay, while no US airline does so.

Though the largest US airlines have committed to rebook stranded passengers for free and cover meals and lodging during disruptions, "airlines can change course on their customer service commitments at their discretion," the department statement said.

"There is no legal obligation for airlines to notify passengers when they are entitled to services promised in the customer service plan, and their policies are generally vague on the details of delivery," the department said.
