Visa Reportedly Wins Lawsuit Over Claims of Gift Card Scam Vulnerability
Jun 24, 2025 4:14 AM

06:56 AM EDT, 06/24/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Visa (V) has defeated a proposed class action lawsuit from consumers who claimed the company failed to warn them that thieves could drain their Vanilla prepaid gift cards, multiple media reports said Tuesday.

The US judge ruled that it was unreasonable to expect gift cards to be scam-proof or to assume that Visa guaranteed protection, the reports said.

The lead plaintiff, Ira Schuman, filed the lawsuit after a customer discovered that $4,000 worth of gift cards he had purchased had been emptied, according to a January 2024 filing.

The judge said that card tampering risks were already publicly known through news and online forums, multiple reports said.

Visa did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
