Walmart Stock Hits A New All-Time High: What's Going On?
Nov 13, 2024 11:06 AM

Walmart Inc ( WMT ) shares hit a new all-time high of $85.54 Wednesday morning, as investors assess the mixed impacts of Donald Trump’s policy agenda on the retail giant.

Trump's proposed tax cuts and a potential rise in consumer disposable income are favorable for Walmart's ( WMT ) core customer base, many of whom are sensitive to economic shifts that impact spending power.

However, Trump's stance on trade tariffs, particularly his pledge to impose a universal 10% tariff on all imports, could pose challenges for Walmart ( WMT ), which relies on global supply chains to keep costs low for consumers.

What To Know: As the world's largest retailer, Walmart ( WMT ) imports a substantial portion of its merchandise, including electronics, apparel and household goods, much of it from China. Higher tariffs on these goods could force Walmart ( WMT ) to raise prices, potentially impacting its “Everyday Low Price” strategy that attracts cost-conscious shoppers.

While Walmart ( WMT ) has previously managed tariff-related price hikes by negotiating with suppliers and absorbing some costs, an across-the-board 10% tariff would be difficult to offset entirely, putting pressure on the retailer’s margins.

On the positive side, Trump's tax cuts could support consumer spending, especially in Walmart's ( WMT ) key markets, where lower- and middle-income households would benefit directly. Increased disposable income may boost sales across Walmart’s grocery and essential goods categories, helping to mitigate some tariff-related impacts.

Additionally, any easing of corporate tax rates could allow Walmart ( WMT ) to reinvest in technology and logistics, bolstering its competitive position against e-commerce players like Amazon.

What Else: Another area of potential impact is Walmart's ( WMT ) international operations, especially in markets sensitive to currency fluctuations. Trump’s policies, which could strengthen the U.S. dollar, may make Walmart’s goods more expensive abroad, potentially impacting its revenue from non-U.S. locations like Mexico and Canada.

Overall, while Trump's consumer-focused policies could boost Walmart's ( WMT ) U.S. sales, trade tensions and global currency effects introduce challenges that could keep investors cautious,

How To Buy WMT Stock

Besides going to a brokerage platform to purchase a share – or fractional share – of stock, you can also gain access to shares either by buying an exchange traded fund (ETF) that holds the stock itself, or by allocating yourself to a strategy in your 401(k) that would seek to acquire shares in a mutual fund or other instrument.

For example, in Walmart’s case, it is in the Consumer Staples sector. An ETF will likely hold shares in many liquid and large companies that help track that sector, allowing an investor to gain exposure to the trends within that segment.

According to data from Benzinga Pro, WMT has a 52-week high of $85.54 and a 52-week low of $49.85.
