Walmart's Mexico Unit Ordered to pay $4.6 Million Over Alleged Monopoly Behavior
Dec 16, 2024 4:02 AM

06:41 AM EST, 12/16/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Walmart's ( WMT ) Mexican and Central American unit Walmex has been ordered to pay 93.4 million Mexican pesos ($4.6 million) in fines by Mexico's antitrust regulator over allegations that it engaged in a "single relative monopolistic practice regarding supplier contributions," the company disclosed on Friday.

"Walmex is disappointed by this decision but will comply with Cofece's resolution while challenging the decision," the company said in a statement, adding that the decision by Cofece's board was split.

The fine stems from a four-year investigation over allegations that Walmex was abusing its market position to force suppliers to succumb to terms that included ending sales to rival retailer Amazon (AMZN), Reuters reported.

Walmex called Cofece's analysis "flawed." Cofece did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
