07:02 AM EDT, 10/04/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Waymo will integrate its sixth-generation autonomous driving system, known as the Waymo Driver, into Hyundai's all-electric IONIQ 5 SUVs under the new multi-year strategic partnership, Hyundai Motor said Friday.

Hyundai said the parties plan to produce a significant volume of IONIQ 5s for the Waymo One fleet over several years.

The first Waymo-enabled IONIQ 5s, which will be assembled at Hyundai's Metaplant America in Georgia, are expected to begin on-road testing in late 2025, with a rollout to Waymo One riders in subsequent years.

The IONIQ 5 vehicles will feature autonomous-ready modifications, including redundant hardware systems and power doors.
