West Bengal's finance minister Amit Mitra says GST has been a failure
May 13, 2019 1:18 PM

West Bengal finance, commerce and industries minister Amit Mitra on Monday said Narendra Modi government's flagship tax reform Goods and Services Tax (GST) has been a failure and everything is in a mess.

In an interview to CNBC-TV18's Shereen Bhan, Mitra said, "On May 23 when you see the results, it will be a reflection of three things. One is massive development, two is party organisation at the grass root level and third is Mamta Banerjee’s personal chemistry and touch with the poor people."

On allegations of denying the benefits of various central government schemes to people of West Bengal, Mitra said, "This really is obfuscation and lies. Much before Ayushman Bharat came, on December 30, 2016, West Bengal launched the Swasthya Sathi Scheme. Ayushman Bharat was launched almost two years later. We already had an established scheme."

Further, Mitra said, "PM-KISAN is very similar. We already have a very major Kisan scheme at every level. Even in capital equipment for Kisan, we have a scheme which I announced in the assembly many years ago."
