08:54 AM EDT, 04/08/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The European Commission has approved the merger between WestRock ( WRK ) and Smurfit Kappa Group, the regulator said Monday.

The two companies said in September they intend to merge and create Smurfit WestRock, to trade on the New York Stock Exchange, after WestRock ( WRK ) acquires and merges with Smurfit for a total consideration equivalent to $43.51 per share.

The Commission said Monday it determined that the proposed transaction did not pose competition issues "given the companies' limited combined market position resulting from the proposed transaction."
