"Ujjwala Yojana has strengthened the lives of the poor and the marginalised," he said, adding that the initiative is playing a central role in social empowerment.

The scheme was launched on May 1, 2016, aiming to provide five crore LPG connections to all the households before 2019. However, earlier this year, the government revised their target to eight crore households.

The scheme was launched to ensure women empowerment in rural areas. The connections are issued in the name of the women who run the households.

The government allocated Rs 8000 crore for the implementation of the scheme.
