A third of startups got 'angel tax' notices in 2018, says report
Jan 17, 2019 2:32 AM

Over 38 percent of the startups in the country - 39,000 at last count - have received 'angle tax' notices in 2018, Financial Express reported.

The ‘angel tax’ notices resulted in a 21 percent fall in capital infusion in startups, the report said citing data from iSPIRT, a think-tank for the Indian software products industry.

The problem plaguing the startup sector was brought to notice in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by iSPIRT, the report said.

The notices were issued under the Section 56 of the Income Tax Act, which considers the angel funding received as 'over and above the enterprise value' as 'income from other sources' and hence taxable under the marginal rate tax of 30 percent, the report added.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Price cuts by major U.S. retailers and new data showing a slowdown in consumer spending may boost the Federal Reserve's confidence in falling inflation and take the edge off of corporate profits that have grabbed a larger share of national income since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Adjusted for inflation both overall consumption and disposable income dropped...

(Reuters) - U.S. inflation tracked sideways in April, a worrying sign for the U.S. central bank that suggests the elevated pace of price increases could last longer than expected and casts doubt on how soon it will be able to cut interest rates. The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index increased 0.3% last month, the Commerce Department said on Friday,...
