After oil, US grants a waiver to India on Chabahar Port
Nov 6, 2018 9:10 AM

In what appears to be a major diplomatic victory for India, the US has given India a go-ahead for operating Chabahar Port in Iran.

The re-imposition of sanctions on Iran by the US impacted the Chabahar port development. India considers the port as one of strategic value because it allows it access to Afghanistan and Central Asia.

The port also opens a transit route from India to Iran and bypasses Pakistan.

Earlier, the US snapped sanctions back in place on Monday to choke off Iran's oil and shipping industries, while temporarily allowing top customers such as China and India to keep buying crude from the Islamic Republic.
